Most people celebrate this day in honor of the God Lugh, others just celebrate it as the day of the first harvest. However you chose to celebrate is great and I hope your day is amazing.
A little Irish history for you….
A long time ago in Ireland people thought it was a bad idea to harvest your grain before Lammas. This meant you had ran out of last years harvest early and you were either failing in your agriculture duties or your fat ass couldn’t stop eating. Anyway as of August 1st the first grain would be cut and by nightfall the wives would have already baked some bread. This is what the Irish call “The Feast of Breads.”
For those of you who are very much into symbolizing your beliefs, such as myself, you may find it hard to find Lammas décor at your local store. However there are many items you can use to decorate for this harvest holiday.
- Sickles and scythes, as well as other symbols of harvesting
- Grapes and vines
- Dried grains -- sheaf’s of wheat, bowls of oats, etc.
- Corn dolls -- you can make these easily using dried husks
- Early fall vegetables, such as squashes and pumpkins
- Late summer fruits, like apples, plums and peaches
Lots of love!
